Matter, Matters!
This unit focuses on an understanding of the basic structure of the atom, including electrons, protons, and neutrons. Students are introduced to the interactions between atoms that result in new substances (bonding), and students begin to use chemical symbols and equations as expressions of interactions among reactants (simple chemical formulas and equations). The concepts defined in this unit build upon the basic understanding of the concept of matter as introduced at Grades 3 and 5. The inquiry skills delineated in SOL 6.1 represent what students should be able to do as a result of science investigations related to atomic structure and should be incorporated into classroom experiences throughout the unit.
